“Love is patient…”(1 Corinthians 13:4)
Patience is the main quality of love. Think about it, if you accurately estimate a person as the image and likeness of God, are you not likely to accord them your patience, even if their behavior is out of order? If yes, you are no different from Abba. The Bible says, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9 NIV). His patience is hinged on His love for people.
The patience of love starts with the respect for people as free moral agents. It is the quality of letting others be themselves and make their own choices, even as they when those choices do not align with yours. It is not manipulative and would rather use prayer to change an outcome than verbal persuasion. And this is also how you can tell love from lust. There is no manipulation in love, just patience.
The patience of love is the reason why we know that we will be kept sanctified until Jesus returns. 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 says, “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.” The accurate knowledge of Him who has called us is a grounding knowledge that assures you and produces patience. For instance, Hebrews 13:5-6 says, “Let your conduct be without covetousness; becontent with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
The accurate knowledge of anyone or thing, which is what love is, is what produces patience. In James 1:2-4, the Bible says,”My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” In other words, there is something about you in the midst of trials that your love (or accurate knowledge of) produces patience from. Your accurate knowledge of trials makes you celebrate that “this too shall pass” and by extension, produces patience as a by-product. So trials become a time of celebration because you know that patience will be manifested at an increased level.
The thing with the patience that love produces is that it puts you in a state in which you have no sense of need. You have rest on all sides because you can outlast anything. This patience of love was what Paul wrote about in Romans 8:37-39 when He said, “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
This love is a love that can outlast anything and so we are patient in trials, knowing that we always win despite the adversity we face.
Have a great day!
