RESPOND TO GOD'S INSTRUCTION WITH "YES!" AND "AMEN!"

6/27/2025

“Simon answered, ‘Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because You say so, I will let down the nets’” (Luke 5:5).

I’ve often said: If God always made sense, He wouldn’t be God. The Word of God was never designed to make sense—it was designed to make faith. God’s Word stretches us beyond human reasoning so that we learn to rely on His power, not our understanding. That’s why the only proper response to God’s instruction is “Yes!” and “Amen!”

We must stop trying to figure God out. Throughout Scripture, we find examples of divine instructions that seemed irrational by human standards.

Take Noah, for instance. God told him to build an ark in preparation for a flood—something Noah had never seen or even imagined. Yet Hebrews 11:7 says, “By faith, Noah respected God’s warning regarding the flood—the likes of which no one had ever seen—and built an ark that saved his family…” Though it made no sense to Noah, he responded by faith. He was ridiculed for doing something “foolish,” yet his obedience preserved a generation.

Consider Naaman, a commander of the Syrian army. Stricken with leprosy, he came to the prophet Elisha for healing. Elisha didn’t even come out to meet him, but sent a message: “Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored” (2 Kings 5:10). Naaman was enraged. He had a better plan in mind—one that aligned with his expectations. But his servants wisely asked, “If the prophet had told you to do some great thing, wouldn’t you have done it? How much more, then, when he says, ‘Wash and be cleansed’?”(vv. 13–14). Naaman obeyed, and his flesh was healed like that of a young boy.

Now think of Simon Peter, a skilled and successful fisherman. He wasn’t a novice—he had business partners and multiple boats. He had exhausted every method and strategy, yet caught nothing. They were already washing their nets, done for the day. Then Jesus, after teaching the crowd from Simon’s boat, gave an instruction that went against everything Simon knew: “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”

Simon’s reply? “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because You say so, I will let down the nets.” (Luke 5:5)

That phrase—“Because You say so”—is one of the most powerful declarations of faith in the Bible. It means: “I’m putting aside my expertise.”“I’m ignoring my past failures.” “I’m disregarding what makes sense to me.” “I’m responding in faith to Your Word.”

The result? A catch so large that their nets began to break and their boats began to sink. What their experience and expertise couldn’t achieve, one word from Jesus accomplished in moments.

Faith comes by hearing—and Simon had heard the Word from Jesus Himself. His faith was stirred, and when the moment to act came, he obeyed.

Friend, God’s instructions may not always make sense. But if you want to experience the miraculous, your response must be one of trust and obedience. Forget the failures. Lay down your credentials. Push past your doubts and fears. And say to God, “Because You said so.”

Reach high. Reach wide. Respond boldly.

God bless you!
