MASTERING THE TONGUE

9/18/2025

“A perfect person is not one who never makes mistakes, but one who has mastered their tongue. James 3:2 says, ‘Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.’ Wisdom is shown in keeping our words few. The more we talk, the more opportunities we create to say what we shouldn’t. And once words are spoken, they cannot be taken back. Scripture reminds us: ‘Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent’ (Proverbs 18:2).

Yesterday, I shared three of six things revealed by excessive talking. Today, let’s look at the fourth: pride.

It is pride when we feel the need to defend ourselves, justify our actions, or give our opinion on every matter. Pride pushes us to speak more than is necessary. Sometimes, a simple “I am sorry” or “thank you for correcting me” is far more powerful than a long-winded explanation of why we think we’re right. Humility receives instruction without trying to prove knowledge.

We see this in John 4, when Jesus asked the Samaritan woman for a drink. Instead of responding with humility, she reacted with pride: “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (v. 9). In today’s terms, she was essentially saying, “Why are you talking to me? Don’t you know who I am?” Even after Jesus offered her living water, she replied with philosophy and skepticism: “Sir, You have nothing to draw with… Are You greater than our father Jacob?” (vv. 11–12). Her pride blinded her until Jesus revealed the details of her life.

Contrast her with Mary, the sister of Martha, who “sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what He said” (Luke 10:39). Mary humbled herself, set aside her own thoughts, and chose to listen. Jesus said of her: “Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:42). Mary chose humility. She chose quietness. She let Christ take the spotlight.

Beloved, it pays to speak less and listen more. Pride pushes us to be loud, but humility allows the Word to speak louder than our opinions. Let your life, not your mouth, bear fruit that glorifies Christ.

To be continued…

Faith-Filled Confession:

My soul rests quietly because it looks to God. From Him comes everything I need. He alone is my Rock, my Deliverance, and my High Tower. Nothing will shake me (Psalm 62:1–2).
