“Watch and pray, that you enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
—Matthew 26:41
As a born-again child of God, you are just like Jesus in your spirit. Scripture says, “As He is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17). Everything God deposited in you—His life, His power, His nature—was placed in your spirit. You are a spirit, you possess a soul, and you live in a body. And within you, the spirit and the flesh are constantly at war. Whichever one gains dominance will determine the direction, quality, and outcome of your life.
If your spirit gains the ascendancy, you will manifest the supernatural life—a life of victory, joy, and divine fulfillment. But if the flesh rules, even though you are born again, your life will reflect failure, frustration, and disappointment. Romans 8:6 makes it clear: “The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”
This is why Jesus warned, “Watch and pray…” Your strength is in your spirit, not in your senses. To live by the flesh is to live from weakness, but to live by the spirit is to live from divine strength. Galatians 5:24 reveals that those who belong to Christ “have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” The flesh has already been rendered powerless—you simply enforce its crucifixion.
Paul demonstrated this discipline when he said, “I beat my body and bring it into submission” (1 Corinthians 9:27). He wasn’t talking about physical punishment but spiritual training—exercising his spirit until his flesh submitted. When the spirit is in charge, it always responds to the Father’s will.
Just as physical muscles strengthen with exercise, your spirit grows stronger with spiritual exercise. The Bible says bodily exercise profits little, but exercising yourself unto godliness brings great gain (1 Timothy 4:7–8).
How do you exercise your spirit?
• Pray—especially in tongues. It sharpens your sensitivity and opens your spiritual ears.
•Do the Word.Acting on the Word is functioning from strength.
•Renew your mind.Replace wrong thoughts with truth. When the flesh rises, declare the Word:
“My flesh is crucified; therefore, I refuse its desires.”
Live from your spirit today. When anger, offense, temptation, or discouragement try to pull you into the flesh, decline the invitation. Choose strength. Choose the spirit.
God bless you!
Faith-Filled Confession
Today, I give no room to sin or the flesh. I function from my spirit, my true place of strength. I manifest the God-life in excellence and victory, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
