FORSAKING MERCY BY BELIEVING LIES

8/12/2025

“They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.”Jonah 2:8

God’s grace and mercy have been poured out abundantly for you to enjoy. “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is Thy faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22–23). His love for you is not based on your performance—what you have done or failed to do—but on His everlasting love.

Mercy is far more than a pardon for sin. It is God’s supernatural, unconditional love in action—pardoning wrongs you deserved punishment for, and bringing goodness you could never earn. As Titus 3:5 says, “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy.”Mercy is a divine vehicle that delivers God’s compassion, grace, and blessings into your life. Hebrews 4:16 invites you to come boldly to God’s throne of grace to receive mercy in your time of need.

Yet, Jonah 2:8 warns that mercy can be hindered: “They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.” Lying vanities are anything false—deceptions, appearances, or circumstances—that attempt to shift your focus from God’s Word. Fear, sickness, lack, and hopelessness are all lying vanities. They may appear real, but they are not the final truth.

The danger lies in giving these things more attention than God’s promises. You are not called to deny reality, but to put it in its proper place—under the feet of Jesus. 2 Corinthians 10:4–5 instructs you to cast down imaginations and every thought that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and to bring every thought into obedience to Christ.

David boldly declared, “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”(Psalm 27:1). That is how you must respond to every challenge—exalting Jesus above every report, symptom, or circumstance. The blind beggar in Luke 18 and the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15 both cried out for mercy, and both received their miracles. God’s mercy is still fresh today—and it is reaching for you right now.

Goodness and mercy are following you today. Do not forfeit them by magnifying the lies of the enemy. Lift your eyes to Jesus, receive His mercy, and watch His hand move in your life.

Faith-Filled Confession:

I embrace God’s mercy today. I refuse to observe lying vanities. I endorse the truth of God’s Word concerning my life, my home, and everything that concerns me. God’s goodness and mercy follow me all the days of my life. Fear has no power over me. I dwell in health, I prosper in all I do, and no weapon formed against me shall prosper. My victory is eternal, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
