“The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37).
Success in any area of your life is directly related to your relationship with the Word. Joshua 1:8 says “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” In light of this, too many are facing difficult situations that could have been avoided, had they stuck with the Word. But the good news is this—it’s never too late to walk in God’s glory if one would just go with the Word. For example, here is a fellow praying and the Lord says, go and serve in your church. If that individual would not take heed to these words for whatever reason, they have already set themselves up for defeat. Period!
Speaking of serving, a certain ruler came to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” and Jesus answered, “What do the scriptures say?” He answered, “'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Then Jesus said “You have answered correctly,” “Do this and you will live.” (Luke 10-25-28). In other words, Jesus was saying that his miracle was in him doing what he already knew to do. Just saying that you love God is not enough; your words must carry a corresponding action. You must care and love others not just as you love yourself but as Christ loves you. Your neighbor in this verse is not just the person that lives next door to you. Your neighbor according to Jesus is that person that needs care and love. We see this in the parable that followed. Jesus told the story of a man who got robbed and left for dead. “A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ Then Jesus asked, “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, ‘The one who had mercy on him’...” (Luke 10:31-37).
The Samaritan was the least expected of the three to help this man. In fact, he was not obligated to do anything because back then, Samaritans were heavily despised by the Jews and were not expected to have any dealings with the Jews. If anyone was expected to help this man, it was either the Priest or the Levi. But it took someone who had no relationship with God to express Heaven to this man in need.
Today, I want to caution you, please do love, serve, show kindness, compassion or honor on the basis of race, nationality, gender, or any outward appearance. Do what you do because it is what Jesus would do. At the end, Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” In other words, go out of your way to serve others without expecting a thank you.
God Bless You!
