"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28).
This is one of the most quoted verses in Scripture. Yet, often it is used out of context as a consolation when things go wrong, almost as though Paul was saying, “Just leave it, life will sort itself out.” But that’s not what the Word teaches.
Romans 8:28 must be read in light of the preceding verses (Romans 8:26–27). Paul was speaking about prayer in the Spirit: “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered…” This means the “labor” Paul speaks of in verse 28 is the labor of prayer—specifically, praying in the Spirit.
When you yield yourself in prayer, the Holy Spirit becomes your prayer partner. He prays through you, interceding according to the will of God. That’s why the Amplified Bible says all things “fit into a plan” when God is a partner in our labor. In other words, things don’t just work themselves out—they work out because you’ve partnered with the Spirit in prayer.
Hebrews 4:11 exhorts us to “labor to enter into His rest.” This labor is not striving in the flesh; it’s the labor of the spirit through prayer. Isaiah 28:11–12 reveals this “rest” is found in speaking with tongues. When you pray in other tongues, you stir up the rest and refreshing of the Spirit, and you align your life with God’s perfect plan.
So, the next time you quote Romans 8:28, remember: it’s not a passive resignation—it’s an active assurance that comes after partnering with the Holy Spirit in prayer. Things don’t just happen; they are worked out in prayer until they fit into God’s design for your life.
Beloved, don’t hand situations over to the “natural course of things.” Instead, rise up in prayer. Speak mysteries in the Spirit. Pray over your family, your assignment, your city, and your future. When you labor this way, you can boldly declare, “All things are working together for my good!”
Faith-Filled Confession
I labor in partnership with the Holy Spirit through prayer. By speaking in tongues, I align with God’s perfect plan. Therefore, I am at rest, knowing that all things are working together for my good. Hallelujah!
