"For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come" (1 Timothy 4:8).
Several years ago, I experienced both physical and spiritual exhaustion, leading me to ask the Lord for strength. As I prayed, I felt an electric surge from the Holy Ghost course through my being, leaving me feeling brand new. Years later, I found myself in a similar state, needing strength once again. As before, I asked the Lord for strength. However, this time, rather than feeling strengthened, I felt my strength ebbing away. In that moment, the Lord said to me, "Don't ask Me for strength. You, strengthen yourself by the Holy Ghost." This was not the answer I had hoped for. Persistently, I asked again for strength, and once more, He responded, "Strengthen yourself." Suddenly, my spiritual eyes were opened to Jude 1:20 and 1 Corinthians 14:4.
Through this experience, the Lord showed me that I could pull myself from weakness to strength by praying in the Holy Ghost. 1 Corinthians 14:4 says, "A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church." In other words, praying in tongues is the Scriptural means for being strengthened. No wonder 1 Timothy 4:8 says, "...bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come." When you exercise yourself in the Holy Ghost by praying in tongues, you gain the benefit of both physical and spiritual exercise.
Praying in the spirit should be a common practice for every Christian. Whether you are cooking, driving, or working, speak in tongues! Learn to sing in the spirit as you go about your chores; it will bring you renewed strength. One thing you must understand about spiritual strength is that it is expendable. To stay full, you must engage the Holy Spirit by praying in tongues because a Christian experiencing spiritual exhaustion is in danger of failing. Proverbs 24:10 says, "If you fail under pressure, your strength is too small." Failure has nothing to do with the size of the devil or the magnitude of the problem; it is the result of a spirit that is not energized. Therefore, to gain strength, you must pray in the Spirit and feed on the Word. Doing this will increase your strength and your sensitivity to the move of the Spirit, the craftiness of the flesh, and the cunningness of the devil.
So, when you feel weak, don't cry to God as I did. Instead, build yourself up on your most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit. The generator is inside you. Turn it on and watch your life go from strength to strength.
Faith-Filled Confession:
My spirit is alive to God, and as I pray, I engage my spirit, and the Spirit of God prays through me. Today, I stir up the gift of God within me by praying in the Holy Ghost. As I do, I am built up in my most holy faith; I rise like an edifice and make progress in all things. In Jesus' name, Amen.
