“He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…” (1 Corinthians 14:4).
One of the greatest blessings God has given to the believer is the ability to pray in tongues. Though many have misunderstood or even resisted this gift, the Word of God clearly reveals that speaking in tongues is available to every believer in Christ. Jesus said, “These signs shall follow them that believe… they shall speak with new tongues” (Mark 16:17). This means that praying in tongues is not reserved for a select few—it is part of the believer’s inheritance.
The Apostle Paul understood the value of this spiritual gift. He said, “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all” (1 Corinthians 14:18). Paul’s life and ministry were marked by strength, revelation, boldness, and supernatural results, and he connected much of that spiritual vitality to his consistent practice of praying in tongues.
The Bible says that when a believer speaks in tongues, he “edifies” himself. The word “edify” means to build up, strengthen, recharge, and empower. In other words, speaking in tongues is spiritual strengthening. It refreshes your spirit, sharpens your sensitivity to God, and energizes your inner man. There are moments when you may feel weak, discouraged, or overwhelmed, but as you begin to pray in the Spirit, strength begins to rise within you.
Praying in tongues is also divine communication with God. First Corinthians 14:2 says that the one who speaks in tongues “speaks not unto men, but unto God… in the spirit he speaks mysteries.” Your spirit is communicating directly with God beyond human understanding. Even when your mind does not fully understand what is being said, your spirit is praying in alignment with God’s perfect will.
Many believers are waiting for God to force them to speak, but the Holy Spirit works through yielded vessels. You must open your mouth in faith and speak. As you yield yourself to the Holy Spirit, the utterance comes. The more you pray in the Spirit, the stronger your spiritual life becomes.
So make it a daily practice to pray and sing in tongues. Build yourself up. Strengthen your spirit. Stir up the gift of God within you. As you do, you will walk in greater boldness, spiritual awareness, and supernatural victory.
Faith-Filled Confession
Thank You, Father, for the gift of the Holy Spirit and the ability to pray in tongues. As I pray in the Spirit, I am strengthened, refreshed, and built up from within. My spirit is energized, my faith is stirred, and I walk in supernatural boldness and victory every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
