“But the Lord answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her’” (Luke 10:41–42).
Do you know that worry is a form of devotion? Worry consumes attention, drains energy, and demands focus. Proverbs 12:25 says, “Worry weighs a person down.” The Hebrew idea of “weighing down” carries the sense of bowing or prostrating in reverence. In other words, worry causes you to bow before the object of your anxiety—it becomes what you worship. That is why the Bible warns us to “be anxious for nothing”(Philippians 4:6). Left unchecked, worry can take God’s place in our hearts.
When you worry, you meditate on your problems day and night. You replay scenarios, nurse past hurts, and imagine worst-case outcomes. For many, this has become a daily devotion—exalting pain and disappointment above Christ. Some rehearse old offenses long after apologies have been given. Others fill their prayers with complaints instead of thanksgiving. Beloved, when you give that much energy to worry, you are bowing to your troubles instead of worshiping your God.
But Jesus shows us a better way. To Martha, He said, “You are worried and bothered about many things, but only one thing is necessary.” Mary chose the good part—devotion to the Lord’s presence. And Jesus promised that this choice could never be taken away.
The same invitation is extended to you. Instead of worrying about what’s missing, what was said, or what might happen, choose the good part. Fix your gaze on Christ, magnify His Word, and steep yourself in His reality. Jesus reassures us in Matthew 6:30–33 (MSG) that if God so carefully tends to wildflowers, He will surely take care of you. Your role is not to strive or stress, but to rest in His care and respond to His giving.
Today, lay your worries at the Master’s feet. Trade them for worship, thanksgiving, and trust. When you shift your devotion from your problems to your God, you’ll find peace, joy, and miraculous answers flowing into your life.
Faith-Filled Confession:
I have joy and peace because I know God is on my side. He is working all things together for my good. I fix my thoughts on His Word, and I refuse to worry. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
